Crew List

Production

Kelly Thewlis
Director

Picture
In May 2002, Steven Spielberg graduated with his bachelors degree in Film and Electronic Arts. His senior project was Schindler’s List. In December 2010, Kelly Thewlis will graduate with a bachelors degree in Electronic Media Production. Her senior project is Breaking News.

To say Spielberg’s college career is similar to Kelly’s would be like saying Kent, Ohio is similar to Kent, England. It’s not. She knows this. But she feels it does make for a nice introduction to her bio.

Speaking of Kent, Ohio, while at the university, Kelly tried to take advantage of every opportunity she could. She was a fashion reporter for Kent Focus, a member of the improv group Portage County Players, worked on set for the video short We Are LeBron, attended workshops in Cleveland and L.A, and works on her own video projects on the side. For the past four years, Kelly has also been heavily involved at Teleproductions, where she expanded her skills to new levels. There she wrote, crewed and edited a variety of documentaries, commercials, TV shows and educational videos.

These opportunities have helped prepare Kelly for her greatest challenge yet: Directing. Breaking News is the first full-length film she has ever directed, and it proved to be an amazing experience that she is truly grateful for. She cannot say enough about the wonderful cast and crew she has been privileged to work with.

Currently, she is interning with The Speakeasy Factory llc. which is in the process of producing three short SAG films. The internship is yet another new experience she is excited to be a part of.

Kelly may have chosen a different path than Spielberg, but she can easily say her path is working out for her so far, and she is open to all possibilities for the future.

Garret Hipsman
production assistant & assistant to the property manager

Picture
Garret Hipsman worked on Breaking News as a production assistant, but quickly settled in as an assistant to the property manager. As this was his first real experience with video production, he was very excited to be a part of this film. He is currently applying the skills he learned on and off set to starting a video news organization at his high school. He hopes to leave it behind as his legacy as he finishes his final year and moves up in the world to college and beyond. Although he enjoys action movies from time to time, he loves a good zombie movie, the comfort food of the horror genre.

Camera

Dustin Lee
Director of Photography

Picture
Dustin graduated from Kent State in 2007 with a degree in Electronic Media Production. He is currently working for the university, developing video content for the communications & marketing department. Although he is enjoying his professional career so far, Dustin's true passion lies in creative filmmaking. He has directed/shot/edited numerous short films and skits, including Another Life (2007), a surrealist drama that was shot in and around the Kent, Ohio area. In terms of a certain visual style, he has attempted to absorb influences from a number of filmmakers, including Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, David Fincher, and Terrence Malick. Some of his favorite films include Star Wars, Back to the Future, The Thin Red Line, and ET.

Devin McCallion
1st Assistant Camera

Picture
If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a film worth! They mean the world to Devin McCallion.  His first production was praised for his vision for his first work in video production, where he directed, edited, starred, shot and wrote a music video.  A production assistant once told Devin that his dedication is shown in his actions and its clear that he is passionate for the projects that he has been apart of.

Devin has written a second music video for a future production and Devin has been working as the First Camera Operator for a feature film all summer at Kent State University. On the set, he has been found his use as a Key Grip, Second Gaffer, assistant to the Director of Photography and even got in the film for a choreographed fight scene.  With a couple of semesters remaining in his road to completing his degree, he looks forward to another feature film in the second year of the program.

Devin has taken acting classes over the years and plans to write and direct future music videos. He also has written a script for a feature film as well as promotional videos for local entertainment businesses. He can be heard describing his career path to be “LA or bust.” refereeing to his goal of living in California working on major working titles in the business.

In his full hearts desire and his deep dedication for film in all aspects of acting, directing, editing, producing and writing, a couple of feature films, music videos and a strong passion for film, Devin McCallion is determined to make it onto the rolling credits on major motion pictures in the near future.

Garrison Ebie
ENG Crew

Picture
Garrison is a 2010 Kent State graduate in Electronic Media with a minor in Political Science. Garrison likes to write boring editorials that no one reads and make avante garde short films that serve no purpose. For being at all interested in student film making, many of his colleages find it peculiar that he almost never watches movies, yet Garrison refutes that this helps create a degree of objectivity and that most movies are pretty terrible anyway.

Garrison is skeptical about the job market even with a college education and earns a living by cooking greasy food for a bunch of drunk bar flies under the presumption that even in the event of the apocalypse, people with still be hungry long after their appetite for new media has subsided. In his spare time he writes songs using the same seven or eight guitar chords, reads way too many books for his own good and aimlessly rides a bicycle wherever the long road takes him.

Mike Beaumont
ENG Crew

Picture
Michael Beaumont graduated with a electronic media production degree May 2010 from Kent State University. He was very dedicated to his academic studies and  achieved the highest honor of Summa Cum Laude upon graduation. Michael is also a member of Kappa Tau Alpha, a national honor society for the top 10% of Kent State's Journalism and Mass Communication students. Although he is part of the ENG crew for the student film "Breaking News," Michael hopes to produce documentaries and run his own company, In a Sense Media Productions.

He has struggled to find success in his field thus far due to the job market, so he plans to move to Austin, Texas where he will find a job that pays more than $7.30 an hour. Michael has however found some success playing guitar and bass for his metal band Break Out the Shotguns. He has always had a love for music and continues to share that love with the people around him. From here, he will wonder until he finds a career that is right for him, but where ever he ends up he will be content because having nothing is everything he needs.

Drew Thompson
Still Photographer & Assistant Location Manager

Picture
Drew Thompson has been in love with cinema since his first trip to the movies at age two.  Ever since, he has embarked on a journey of discovery and knowledge that he hopes will lead him into the heart of the motion picture industry as a cinematographer, editor, writer, and director.

Hailing from the Bible-belting state of Louisiana, Drew spent much of his childhood on the move, also living in Kansas and Ohio.  Partly because he didn’t see much of them, he has always had a fondness and interest in family history.  Growing up, and continuing to this day, his passions include hunting, fishing, architecture, photography—and movies.  Always preferring life’s creative side, in high school he participated in drama and band; in the latter he held a position as drum major his senior year, and he also was awarded the John Philip Sousa band award.  He graduated high school in Newton Falls, Ohio, in 2007.

Drew has worked for a funeral home, movie theater, fast food restaurant, landscaping crew, pizza place, and now on a feature film for Kent State University, where he is currently a junior.  Though trying—even maddening—at times, the set of Breaking News has taught Drew a lot of practical information about working on films and has gained him new friends.

Drew hopes to graduate as a Photojournalism major in the Journalism and Mass Communication School at KSU.  The plan is to work for a newspaper or magazine and work as a photographer-for-hire until he decides to (or can afford to) attend a film school, or use his work to apply for film industry jobs on the photography end.

Justin Tillman
Assistant Casting Director & Locations Manager

Picture
Early in his life, Justin Tillman knew he enjoyed talking.  Except, throughout his childhood, he was always reprimanded for talking—everywhere:  school, home, and early workplaces.  Then, after a long hiatus, Justin returned to Kent State University.  Justin found a degree that geared towards the art of negotiation:  Communication Studies, primarily the public track, seemed to be a perfect fit.  This track specialized in argumentation, high-impact speaking, language, and meaning, gave Justin the tools he needed to thrive in this field.  He plans on getting a job, ideally in lobbying and contract negotiation.  Realistically, however, he knows that he will, aside from being a substitute teacher, spend the majority of the next several years on his couch playing video games of varying intelligence and education.

Justin’s many interests include movies, television, talking to females, and hiking.  He also sings, reads graphic novels, and takes long walks on the beach.  His ultimate goal is to be, not necessarily rich, but happy.  It’s all about smile distribution—that stuff’s the NUTS!
